Rum: Great for Sipping
Rum is great as for sipping liquor, while a lot of people mix it in mixed drinks there is a big market for sipping rums. The darker Rums are probably the best sipping rums, but some say it is the golden rums that are best for this. People have been enjoying the rum as we know it since the 1600’s since one of the first distil in Stanton Island started distilling it. Some say that in Malay they have been drinking some sort of rum for thousands of years. It is the modern distil that gives us the rum we so much like today. Rum is primarily fermented from molasses, but some rum is fermented from sugar cane juice and still yet some rum are fermented from a combination of the two. Molasses is made up of more than 50 percent sugar, but it also has other distinct minerals in it that will add to the flavour of the rum. Depending on where the molasses is grown will give you slight variations in the taste of the rum.
Rum today comes in a few different variations, depending on where it is made and distilled and the process used to do this. Some of the different rums are listed below:
*Golden Rum
This is rum that has not been inside the aged oak barrels as long as the darker rums. It is usually very smooth and has that golden colour when held to the light.
*Spiced Rum
Spiced rum gets it spice from some different spices and fruits used. It will usually range on the dark side of colour, but will differ in taste depending on the spices and fruits used. So where it is made and bottled will depend on the exact taste of your spiced rum.
*Dark Rum
This is rum that has been kept inside the aged oak barrels for an extended period. All rum is clear when coming out of the still, but will get its colour from the aged oak barrels it is kept in. The longer it is kept in the barrels the darker and more full bodied the rum will be.
With all liquors and alcohol drinks you should remember to drink responsible and rink with sense. Social drinking can be done with responsibility and some common sense; in this way everyone is sure to have a great time. These rums are being distilled all over the world now. In Europe one of the great rum distillers is Alnwick Rums. Alnwick Rum had been producing fine rums for over 90 years and is still going strong. It is said that at one time the family recipe for rum had been lost for 20 years, but do not worry it has been found again and their still are producing fine rums again.
So the next time you are thinking of having some friends over and they are fond of rum, stop and pick up a good bottle of dark rum and try this rum as a sipping rum, you will not be disappointed.
